After a long absence...

Hello all! Fewh! Raya is long over by now and at last I took out my Raya banner. Hehehe! I know... I know... I didn't post for over a month. October past by just a blink of an eye. I almost can't recall what was happening in October. I definitely travel a lot, almost every weekend to and fro Kerteh. The total time I spent traveling on the road would be the same if not more than the time I spent sleeping every night (yeah... of course I exclude the time I nap in the car while my hubby is driving... hehehe).

Anyway,  first there was the travel visiting families and friends and attending to open houses (but some I couldn't make it to due to the distance and the timing). Then there was a few days of preparation for our own open house... well since I'm the only cook in the house we only invite our neighbours, a few colleagues and a few friends who live nearby. Next my long due Wilton Course 3 which I had postponed since August. I'll share the picture of my graduation cake and post about it later.

Last but not least, late last October, my mum, my big sis, kak long, and her daugthter, Aini, went for Haji. My aunt, Ucu, her husband, Pakcik Zamri, and their daughter (my cousin), Nadzirah, also went together. This year, Raya Haji will fall on Friday and hence this year it'll be Haji Akhbar, insyaAllah! I pray for them all a good health and for their safety and hope they will be rewarded with Haji Mabrur, insyaAllah!

Thank you for dropping by here and for your time shared reading my post.

Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

My daughter's favourite and mine too, chocolate chip cupcakes for afternoon tea.

Spiced Layered Cake with Asam Gambir

Or known as Lapis Asam. I made this for my mom for Hari Raya along with the Lapis Keju.
I need to improve my layering skills to get the perfect layered effect. As you can see, on some layers the asams are not visible.

Cheese Layered Cake

Or better known as Lapis Cheese. Not that simple to make due to the layered effect intended but very cheesy nyummy-licious. This one I made for my mother for Hari Raya. At the background you can see my kuih raya containers, kuih bangkit santan, kuih gunting, kuih bijan and biskut suji, all are traditional cookies.

Biskut Suji (Semolina Cookies)

My kuih Raya for this year, biskut suji with only four ingredients; all purpose flour, semolina, ghee and caster sugar. Very simple and easy to make.

Wilton Fondant & Gum Paste Course

Last August I finished the course, Wilton Fondant and Gum Paste. I did four cakes for the course but on the last day I only brought the square cake because we were travelling here and there so there was not much space in the car to bring all four.

Thank you again Renuga for your help and guidance during classes. Thank you too to all my classmate as it was really fun having the course with all of you.

Transformers Cake

"More than meet the eyes"

Ben10 Cake

A special date indeed, 9th September 2009. Happy birthday Harris! I hope you like the cake and enjoy it.
Thank you Kak Lina for your trust and for ordering the cake from me.

It is a chocolate sponge cake with chocolate mousse filling. Then iced with white vanilla buttercream and decorated with hand design fondant. As you can see, I hand painted the lettering of BEN with food coloring.

Happy Eidulfitri !

To all muslims out there I just want to wish everyone a happy Eidulfitri. I know it's a little bit late but to me it's better late than never.

The above beautiful picture (I use it as a banner) wishing Selamat Hari Raya is by Lee, the designer from www.Lefiores.com. It is a picture of  the backdrop of  The Mid Valley's Raya decoration setting for 2008. I love it very much because it has aesthetic value and classic looking.

To family and friends who know me, Selamat Hari Raya and Maaf Zahir Batin.

Tiramisu Cake

Tiramisu is is one of the most popular Italian cake which is made of lady finger biscuits dipped in espresso or strong coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of egg yolks, mascarpone cheese, cream and sugar and topped with cocoa powder.

I love tiramisu very much as it is one of my all-time favourite desserts. Nyum-nyum-nyum-nyummy ! It is very easy to make and there is no need to bake (provided that you use ready baked lady finger biscuits). I used to make tiramisu quite a lot back when I was a student. I remember the last tiramisu I made was back when I was in Manchester during my final semester of my third year in university. Fewh! That is quite a long time ago.

Anyway, it is not that I don't want to make any tiramisu in Malaysia. I found that it is very hard to get mascarpone cheese here in Malaysia, if any, it is very expensive. Dairy cream is also scarce and expensive too. I felt that it was convenient to just go and buy a piece of tiramisu from Secret Recipe or Starbuck everytime I fancy some. It was convenient for my waist too! Hehehe!

That was then, now I've decided to make one for my family for 'buka puasa' (breaking our fasting of the day). So last week during a stay in KL, I went to a wholesale bakery supplies store, Bake With Yen, (which I found out that I can actually order my ingredients from them in advance especially cream cheese, mascarpone cheese, sour cream and dairy cream) and bought all that i needed. Yeay! They have everything!

Yesterday, I made not one but two large rectangular dishes of Tiramisu. Hmmm... it was really good and now I know it is much much more satisfying eating a piece that you make on your own than eating a piece that you bought from a cafe. Anyway, we did not eat it all at one go. We still have one large dish of tiramisu in the fridge, which I plan to serve again for today 'buka puasa'.

Spidey Cupcakes

Yet another character, Spiderman!

The toppers were handmade by myself using sugar paste. Then I piped chocolate ganache to make the web effect on the iced cupcakes.

Yes, I love to make these characters. Lots of other people love them too.

Hello Kitty

Another cartoon character! Kids love their cartoon characters and cupcakes altogether, don't they?!

Spongebob Cupcake

My daughter love to watch Spongebob Squarepants. But who does not? So, I made a few cupcakes with the character as topper.

Thomas and friends cuppies

These were made a few months back. I think it was in March this year.

Thirty-six altogether, mixes of chocolate cupcakes and vanilla cupcakes covered with rolled fondant. All decorations were made using rolled fondant too. The trains were made using Wilton's chocolate mould.

Garfield & Friends Cuppies

I made these a few months back. I could not remember exactly when. Anyway, I would like to thank Kak TJ for ordering it from me. It was for her daughter's birthday. I remembered that it was short-noticed, so I only had about one day to make the cuppies before pick-up time.

The cuppies were mixes of vanilla cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes. Before designing the cartoon faces, I brushed a layer of apricot glaze on the cupcakes. Then I covered them with poured fondant for a smooth surface. The details were made from rolled fondant and edible ink.

I did not sleep the whole night because I was too excited and I was afraid I would not finish it in time if otherwise. Anyway, it was really great and really fun making those Garfield faces and his friends. Mostly, I got the inspiration from Bakerella. Thanks Bakerella for your great posts!

Chocolate Chocolate Mousse Cake

My husband's colleague ordered this cake.
Everything chocolate! The cake is 9" chocolate cake layered with vanilla buttercream and chocolate mousse filling and covered with dark chocolate ganache and decorated with chocolate cream, chocolate beans and chocolate rice.

If you love chocolate cake with chocolate mousse this cake is for you.

A Buttercream Cake

I made this cake early last June, in the school holidays.

In Malaysia, school holidays are the wedding seasons. Trust me, almost every day during the school holidays there will be weddings everywhere around Malaysia.

This time around, I use buttercream to cover the cake. Inside it is a chocolate layered cakes with strawberry jam filling. On top I decorated the cake with royal icing Victorian roses, Wilton method.

My customer pick out this design from the book, Decorating Cakes by the Wilton School. It was great and fun to have made this cake.

Alin & Amir, 7 June 2009

Congratulations!

Alin and Amir posing while cutting their wedding cake.

With ivory-brown colour theme in mind, I made these four tiered wedding cake for them.
I baked the chocolate fudge cakes three days before their wedding and decorated them with vanilla flavoured rolled fondant and piped royal icing dots all around the cakes. The brooch on the ribbon are also made from fondant and decorated with gold coloured sugar dragerees and royal icing. To finish the look, I added the silk brown large open roses.

I got my inspiration from the book Couture Wedding Cakes by Mich Turner.

Alin's Kek Hantaran

Early last June, I made these cakes for Alin's wedding for her hantaran.

Altogether twelve mini fruit cakes and 6" square fruit cake decorated with rolled fondant and white and chocolate royal icing victorian roses.

The cakes were presented inside the decorated wedding hantaran box.

Apis & Jun, 6 June 2009

First of all, congratulations to Apis and Jun!

For their wedding, I made them a three tiered wedding cake with gold and yellow colour theme and stacked roses in between. On top of the cake I added two beautiful white pigeons to symbolised them as the romantic couple of the day.

The cake was presented right at the center of attention, in front of the main wedding banquet table.

Course 2 Graduation Cake

Hooray!!! I have completed Course 2 of Wilton Method of Cake Decorating last month.

Here, I just want to share with you my graduation cake picture! I'm just proud of myself. I so love the piped flowers and the basketweaves. Thanks a lot to my instructor, Renuga, and to all my course-mates.

Zoomed in for closer look at the flowers and the bird.

Aini's 3rd Birthday!

Happy Birthday Aini!

I made this cake for my 'little' niece, Aini, who turned three years old, last 21st of May. Since she loves her little soft toy, Bug, so much that she could not go to sleep without it, I have made a little fondant version of it.

Dear Aini, may you have happy years ahead and be successful in life!

Amileen's 1st Birthday

Happy belated birthday Mileen!

My youngest daughter celebrated her first birthday almost three weeks ago. It was a hectic week as I had to finish many orders that week. Amazingly, I manage to make her a birthday cake, a simple one though.

Emuah!!!... Mama loves you Mileen!

Sweet Chocolate Chocolate Cupcakes

Another set of cupcakes for my aunt, Mak Uda.

These are my Double Chocolate Cupcakes with floral and red theme going on.
With just a ribbon on top, the looks is complete, I think!

Oh... apple blossoms are so sweet!

Sweet Vanilla Vanilla Cupcakes

These are my Double Vanilla Cupcakes that I made especially for my aunt, Mak Uda. Thank you so much for your support Mak Uda, and not to forget Pak Uda as well.

I never get bored with cupcakes. With so many design that I can think of sometimes I'm just undecided. Hence, the many designs.

I got my inspiration to make these designs mainly from the Peggy Porschen's book Pretty Party Cakes.

Miniature cakes

I went to a Mini Wedding Workshop about three weeks ago at ICCA, Sri Hartamas.
It was really fun playing with the rolled fondant and gumpaste to make the mini cakes, though the workshop started quite late due to unavoided circumstances.
So anyway, in the workshop we successfully did four designs of mini wedding cakes.
Thanks a lot to our instructor Adlina.

I will be making lots more mini cakes for sure. They are not necessarily be a mini wedding cake!
